Mindfulness App: Headspace

with No Comments

Headspace is an app with a focus on medication and mindfulness and includes adorable illustrations of little cartoon characters to guide you through the app’s features.

Headspace is free to try, but costs $89.99 a year for a personal subscription.  Happily, they offer the app free to all K-12 teachers, school administrators and supporting staff in the US, UK, Canada and Australia!

The guided meditations are somewhat customizable, allowing you to choose a male or female voice. I personally didn’t love either of the voices, which left me a bit distracted at the beginning of my meditations with this app, but that will come down to personal preference, and fortunately you can “try before you buy.”

Headspace also has a large selection of Sleepcasts to help the user fall or get back to sleep. Unfortunately for me, these are also all in the two voice options.

There is a small kids’ section on the app, but I was not able to explore it fully without purchasing.

There are also some specialty sections with guest speakers on specific topics related to sports or other types of performance.

Headspace also has cute little cartoon videos, animations, and graphics which talk about mindfulness and meditation in an informational way for beginners and new practitioners.

Overall, Headspace is a great choice for use in a school setting because of its availability free for educators. It is also presented in a visually clean, fun, and appealing way, which would lend itself well to teaching meditation and mindfulness techniques to beginners.
